Court to hear key tape recordings

A- A A+

Tape recordings, allegedly describing a plot to frame two Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chiefs, will be heard when the Constitutional Court resumes its judicial review filed by the detained commissioners against the law on the KPK on Tuesday.

A number of top law enforcers are mentioned in the recordings, the transcript of which had been widely circulated prior to the court hearing, which is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

The newly formed fact-finding team to investigate the police’s decision to arrest the suspended KPK deputy chiefs, Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto, is expected to attend the hearing in order to listen to the recordings.

The police are accusing Chandra and Bibit of abuse of power and arrested them last week to facilitate the investigation, just after the media published the recordings.

Chandra and Bibit are seeking a judicial review of Article 32 of the 2002 law on the KPK, which orders the suspension of KPK leaders for their implication in criminal cases and their dismissal once they stand trial. The plaintiffs say the article violates the 1945 Constitution which upholds presumption of innocence.
