The Regional Representatives Council (DPD) has urged Education Minister Muhammad Nuh to delay a plan to recruit state university students based on their National Final Examination (UAN) results.

Sulistiyo, head of the DPD's committee III overseeing education, religion and people’s welfare, said Tuesday the plan required a thorough discussion with experts and schools before its implementation.

State universities have so far recruited most of their students through admission tests.

“It is common to see schools violating UAN procedure just to help their students pass the test, which means the UAN results do not actually represent the real standards of these students," Sulistiyo said in a statement.

"If the ministry determines UAN result as the only requirement to enter a university, it will certainly add burden to stake holders, including schools and their students."

Sulistiyo, who is also chairman of the Indonesian Teachers Union (PGRI), suggested that the minister evaluate the university admission procedure.

"An admission test to university is supposed to be able to predict the student's potential," he said.
