The National Police have released suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputies Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah, citing it was in the public’s interest.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Nanan Soekarna told kompas.com his office had decided to release the two leaders after receiving letters from their lawyers.
“We have
not succumbed to pressure [to release them].
“We have done it due to public interests,” he said.
He added the move would not hinder an investigation into the leaders’ alleged abuse of power and extortion.
“We will continue with the legal process and not change the charges,” he said. (ewd)

At last, a victory for common sense - and a recognition of mounting adverse public opinion. We must stop gaoling suspects that are not a threat to the community and can be readily prevented from 'disappearing' by a combination of a bail surety, periodic reporting to police, surrender of passport and other such sanctions. Time to rethink the current approach.Andrew_98 (not verified), Jakarta — Wed, 11/04/2009 - 12:14am
Thank you KPK, for keeping the anti-corruption fight alive. You will win. The cicak is eating the buaya! And today will be remembered as a great day in the history of Indonesian justice. The floodgates of accountability have been opened once and for all. The ability of law enforcers to protect corruptors and persecute people who defend justice is crumbling. One question though. Why are the national police chief and the attorney general still employed?
