Papuan police have lost contact with one of their Skytruck M28 planes on a flight from Sentani Airport in Jayapura to Mulia Airport in Puncak Jaya, an official said Monday.
The plane was carrying supplies for the police's Mobile Brigade officers on duty in Puncak Jaya, said Jayapura Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Mathius Fackhiri.
"The plane left Sentani Airport at 11:38 a.m. local time, and was expected to arrive at Mulia Airport at 1:30 p.m., but lost contact at 2:00 p.m.," he told The Jakarta Post.
He added the plane, piloted by Adj. Sr. Comr. Yunus, co-pilot Second Insp. Benedictus and flight technicians First Brig. Saiful and Kuswanto, was carrying eight barrels of fuel and other supplies.
"It lost contact somewhere over Faoa and Mele villages," Mathius said.
Jayapura Search and Rescue Agency head Suyatno said the plane was on its second flight when it lost contact with the Sentani Airport control tower at 11:58 a.m.
At 4:30 p.m. the control tower received information from a Susi Air plane, piloted by Capt. Tom Robertson and co-pilot Badenhos, that they had received a weak signal from the Skytruck when they were over the Ilu area.
Suyatno said a search and rescue team would comb the area for the plane Tuesday.
Air accidents are common in Papua.
