UK Trade Minister Lord Davies of Abersoch will visit Indonesia on Nov. 3-4 to encourage the Indonesian government to resist the temptation of protectionism.
The first UK minister to hold talks with the new Indonesian administration will meet Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Zahedy Saleh.
"Indonesia is a growing economic power in the region and one of a number of countries that is likely to become increasingly important in the future," Lord Davies said.
"We have identified this country as a high-growth market and one that has great potential for UK exporters. Indonesian companies can also benefit from trading and doing business in the UK. Keeping borders open is the only way to increase prosperity," he added.
Indonesia's economy grew by 4.1 percent in the first half of this year amid the global economic crisis, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Last year it grew by 6.1 percent.
"The country has a growing and affluent middle class of some 20 million people that has considerable buying power. British retailers are well represented in the country," he said.
