Poor weather forced a team from the Jayapura Search and Rescue Agency Wednesday to cancel a plan to evacuate victims of a police airplane that crashed near Mt. Dormen in Papua’s highland regency of Puncak Jaya.

Jayapura Sentani Airport officer, Joko Harjani, said the search and rescue team were ready to board their plane when they were told the mission was called off due to thick fog around the accident site.

Another team landed at their base camp in Dabra, which is located about five minutes by flight from site.

“All the logistical supplies have been sent to Dabra using a private Susi Air plane and an Air Force helicopter,” Joko said.

The police’s Skytruck plane, piloted by Adj. Comr. Yunus, was carrying eight drums of fuel when it lost contact with Sentani Airport about 30 minutes after takeoff. The plane’s wreckage was found at Mt. Dormen. earlier on Wednesday.
