PALEMBANG: South Sumatra Governor Alex Noordin said Tuesday civil servants in his administration would next year be required to speak English in their daily communications.

"If administration agency heads refuse to do so, they will be asked to resign for refusing to support what we are trying to build," Alex said.

He added the move was part of efforts to develop human resources in the province.

He urged civil servants to start taking English courses before the implementation of the new requirement.

To make the program a success, the provincial administration will hold a seminar - in English - on work motivation, the governor said. The seminar will feature several native English speakers, he added. - JP
