Indah, in her 20s, was reading in a library in Slipi, West Jakarta, on Monday night when the electricity in the building suddenly cut out.
"I was alone in dark," she says.
"I was scared since the library has automatic doors and no vents."
She added the librarian was outside at the time, and she was the only visitor in the room.
After a few minutes, the building's generator kicked in and Indah managed to leave the library.
"What a bad experience," she says.
"*State power company* PLN should be more professional."
She is not alone.
Chrise, a resident of Palmerah, Central Jakarta, said he found his house in the dark when he returned home from work at midnight on Monday.
"I couldn't cook dinner, I couldn't sleep until 3:30 a.m. because it was so hot without a fan," he grumbles.
Large swaths of Greater Jakarta suffered blackouts that lasted from Monday night until Tuesday morning, due to problems at two of PLN's substations.
Many residents of Jakarta, Tangerang and Bogor spent the night in the dark.
PLN Greater Jakarta general manager Purnomo Willy said the Muara Karang substation in North Jakarta and the Gandul substation in South Jakarta were out of operation.
"Last night, PLN staff were doing maintenance work at one of the two stations in Gandul," he said.
"The other station was able to supply electricity needed during the night.
"But then we had a sudden problem with the Muara Karang substation, which affected the Gandul substation. Both substations then ceased operating."
Purnomo said the Gandul substation had resumed operation at 4 a.m. Tuesday, restoring power to some of the affected areas.
However, many areas in South, West Jakarta and North Jakarta, as well as Tangerang, suffered a blackout until 7 p.m.
Lilia Putranti Maharani, a resident of Ciputat, Tangerang, said the power went off at 1 p.m.
"I was about to turn on my laptop to check my email when the blackout occurred," she said.
"This wasn't the first time. Two weeks ago, I had the same problem as well, and it's getting really annoying." (mrs)
