Letter: Guilty until innocent

A- A A+

This is a comment on a news report "Police tightens security at Brimob detention center," (the Post's online, Oct. 1).

It looks like just another case of "guilty until innocent"; jail before charge or trial. If we were smart we would stop sending low risk suspects to jail, provide the opportunity for bail conditions, confiscate passports and other appropriate measures - at least for high profile public officials.

These people are not being suspected of terrorism! If the accused are eventually found innocent, we tend not to even apologize for having punished them with jail while they waited for court trial. Whatever we think of the fairness of the legal and judiciary we could at least adhere to the cornerstone of any sound legal system, the presumption of innocence; treat people as innocent until guilt can be proven.
