Former Bank Indonesia senior deputy Miranda Swaray Goeltom denied Wednesday that she had bribed House of Representatives (DPR) members in order to be reelected for a second term at the central bank.
“[I was] asked if I gave them money, I said no,” Miranda told reporters after being grilled at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as a witness in the bribery scandal.
When asked about her meeting with several House members in a hotel to ask them to elect her, she only smiled, kompas.com reported.
Last week Miranda also visited the KPK office to be questioned in relation to the same case.
The bribery scandal came to light following the confession of a former legislator from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Agus Condro, who admitted to have received traveler’s checks worth a total of Rp 500 million after Miranda was elected as senior deputy of the central bank for a second term.
He said three weeks before the selection of candidates for the post in 2004, members of the Finance and Banking Commission, who were in charge of the selection, were told to choose Miranda. In return, they would receive traveler’s checks worth between Rp 300 million and Rp 500 million each.
Earlier reports stated the KPK had named four suspects in the case, Dudhie Makmun Murod, Endin A.J. Soefihara and Hamka Yandhu (all former members of the Finance and Banking Commission) as well as former Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) member Udju Djuhaeri.
