The National Police will follow up a defamation lawsuit filed by businessman Anggodo Widjojo against leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for circulating a tape recording of his conversations with a number of law enforcement officials.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Nanan Sukarna said Wednesday the police would not discriminate against certain people, including Anggodo, who according to the conversation, orchestrated the alleged incrimination and arrest of KPK deputy chairmen Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.

“The police will accommodate whoever files a case with us. The plaintiff has legitimate grounds to question us if we do not follow up on the lawsuit,” Nanan told Antara news agency.

Anggodo’s lawyer, Bonaran Situmeang, said the KPK had violated the law by wiretapping his client, who was not being investigated by the anti-corruption body when the bugging activities took place.

Bonaran also said the KPK had no right to wiretap him, saying the law on wiretapping members of the legal profession protected lawyers from wiretapping activities.
