AKARTA: Indonesian pencak silat athletes Sodik Muhammad and Anisa Pangestina advanced to the semifinals at the Asian Indoor Games on Tuesday, giving the country hope for more medals at the event being held in Vietnam.
Sodik defeated Thailand's Nimma Chaiwat in the elimination round of the men's 65-kg division, while Anisa beat Malaysia's Wan Abdul Razak Nurul Hidayu in the women's 60-kg division.
Sodik next faces Malaysia's Mohamad Julaimi Mohamad Saifullah in the semis, while Anisa's opponent will be decided Wednesday.
Indonesia is currently eighth in the medal tally at the third annual games, after picking up three gold, one silver and 10 bronze medals.
Two of the gold medals came from Pratama Putu Yudhi Surya in the vovinam men's singles, and Puspitasari Ayu Kadek, Ariani Dewa Ayu Komang and Sari Ni Komang Dyah Purnama in the vovinam women's doubles.
The third gold medal came from Herawati Margaretha in the women's bi-fin swimming 100-m.
Although vovinam is a form of Vietnamese traditional martial arts, the Indonesian squad fared well, winning the two gold medals and five bronze.
In the sepak takraw competition, Indonesian could only manage a silver and a bronze.
