JAKARTA: Indonesian elementary school students have grabbed first position in the 3rd Wizards at Mathematics International Competition (Wizmic) that recently took place in Lucknow, India.

The students managed to secure 10 gold, nine silver and five bronze medals; beating tough competitors from Bulgaria, Thailand and the Philippines.

In the individual category, Henry Jayakusuma, a student of elementary school SD PL Bernardus in Semarang, Central Java, recorded the highest score; while in the group category, the Indonesian team successfully secured the highest group prize, the Overall Champion.

Indonesia sent 19 students to the competition to join 207 students from nine countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and India.

The competition ran from Oct. 27 to Oct. 30.

Indonesia's National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said the winners in the 2009 Wizmic, as well as winners in other international student olympiads, would be entitled to scholarships up to the doctorate level anywhere in the world they wished.

"We have children with extraordinary potential, so it becomes a challenge to teachers and educators here to develop what has been achieved by our students not just in Indonesia, but also at the global level," Nuh said while receiving the Indonesian Wizmic participants in Jakarta. - JP
