DEPOK: Depok Health Agency has found that 13 out of 40 water refill companies sell unhygienic products in the city.
A test proved that water samples from the companies were contained with cadmium, lead and coli bacteria, which exceeded the permitted rate. Consuming water with enormous amounts of these components may cause damage to the kidneys and liver.
The agency's official, Karnadi, said that excessive amounts of these components might have resulted from contaminated raw water or unhygienic production equipment used by the companies.
"We have sent them warning letters and we will continue to supervise them," he said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Meanwhile, the companies that passed the tests received stickers saying, "The products of this company have been tested by Depok Health Agency".
The companies may display the stickers in their offices, but the agency said they would take them down if companies were found to produce unsafe products in the future, said Karnadi.
Karnadi said there were about 200 water refill producers in the city and more would be tested in 2010. - JP
