Bali Arts Center sees dwindling visitor numbers

DENPASAR: The Bali Arts Center, once an architectural landmark of the Island of the Gods, is experiencing a drop in the number of visitors to its various arts facilities.

Arts center head Dewa Nurjana Putra said the number of visitors to the arts facilities, including the amphitheater, exhibition rooms and spacious park filled with traditional Balinese sculptures, had been halved.

In the January-May 2008 period, the number of visitors to the arts complex reached 10,218 people, comprising 3,666 domestic tourists and 6,552 overseas visitors.

During the same period this year, however, the arts complex has attracted a mere 5,419 people.

"We have no idea what caused the significant fall in the number of visitors to the arts center," Putra said, suggesting it may have been due to fewer art performances and exhibitions.

Under the auspices of then Bali governor Ida Bagus Mantra, the arts center was built in l973 as a venue to accommodate traditional, modern and contemporary art performances.

All buildings, including the 6,000-seat amphitheater, are fully adorned with elaborate Balinese stone carvings and ornate Balinese architectural elements.
