State SOE Minister Mustafa Abubakar said Friday the country aimed to produce 8.9 million tons of sugar in 2025 after revitalizing and constructing sugar factories.
"We are aiming to produce 5.6 million tons of sugar for consumption and 3.3 million tons for industry," Mustafa said.
He said the government had planned to revitalize existing and build new sugar factories as well as acquire 300,000-400,000 hectares of land for sugarcane plantations.
"We will start this plan next year," Mustafa said, adding the government would build four out of the 11 planned sugar factories in 2010.
The country’s state and private sugar companies currently produce 2.7 million tons of sugar for consumption and 2.1 million tons for industrial use each year.
