Middleman Ari Muladi said he told a lie to the police to keep businessman Anggoro Widjojo from a bribery scandal that implicates suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chiefs Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.

Ari said on Saturday after a questioning by the government’s fact finding team formed to probe into an alleged plot to frame the KPK leaders that Anggoro’s brother Anggodo Widjojo took him to National Police detective chief Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji to tell the officer that he had given money to KPK official Ade Rahardja.

The money, amounting to Rp 5.1 billion (US$540,000), was supposed to be extended to Bibit, Chandra and other KPK officials as bribes.

Ari said it was Anggodo who asked him to tell Susno he had handed the money to Ade to help Widjojo’s family stay out of the case. Ari added that he regretted that he had told a lie.

The police launched an investigation into Chandra and Bibit based on, among others, Ari’s testimony. But later Ari withdrew his account, saying he gave the money to Yulianto, who claimed to know KPK leaders well.

“I received the money, totaling Rp 5.1 billion from Anggodo and later gave it to Yulianto,”Ari said.

Yulianto's whereabouts remain unknown.

Anggoro is the fugitive director of PT Masaro Radiokom who has been named a suspect in a bribery case involving a communication system project at the Forestry Ministry.

A tape recording of a conversation between Anggodo and several top law enforcement officials has revealed a plot to frame the KPK deputies.
