A lawyer for middleman Ary Muladi says his client has been searching for key witness Yulianto, who has disappeared since Ary was questioned in connection with alleged bribery and extortion implicating Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) deputy chiefs Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto in July.
“According to Ary, Yulianto is real. We believe our client had been looking for him in Surabaya and Yogyakarta, but to no avail,” Ary’s lawyer Sugeng Teguh Santoso told kompas.com on Saturday.
Sugeng said Ary met Yulianto in Surabaya. Ary asked Yulianto to hand over money from businessman Anggodo Widjojo to Chandra and Bibit as Yulianto claimed to know the KPK leaders well.
“Ary saw Yulianto hand over the money to two people, who Yulianto said were Bibit and Chandra, inside a car. There were three other people in the car,” Sugeng said.
Ary had previously told the police he himself met with Bibit and Chandra to give the money, but later on he withdrew his testimony, saying he had asked for Yulianto’s help because he was not familiar with the KPK leaders.
National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said investigators believed Ary had told a lie as he could not show Yulianto’s phone number and address.
