YOGYAKARTA: The Yogyakarta governor has set the 2010 minimum wage for workers at Rp 745,694 per month.

The new wage was set in a Nov. 2 gubernatorial decree, and will take effect on Jan. 1 next year.

Yogyakarta provincial administration spokesman Biwara Yuswantana said Friday that this was 90 percent of the average fair living cost for people in the province.

The new wage was less than the Rp 780,000 proposed by the Yogyakarta Workers' Alliance (ABY).

"Why is the new wage not in line with the real needs of workers?" ABY leader Umi Akhiroh said, expressing disappointment.

The legislative council had proposed the 2010 monthly wage be increased to Rp 735,000 from Rp 700,000 this year. Employers should report at least 10 days before the decree comes into effect should they not be able to afford the increase, the administration said.

Businesses that have paid their workers more than the new wage were not allowed to decrease the wage. - JP
