Former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar said Sunday he had testified against two KPY deputy chiefs based on his meeting in Singapore with Anggoro Widjojo, who is suspected of corruption.
Speaking to reporters after being grilled by the fact-finding team in Jakarta, Antasari gave his version about the current infighting between the KPK and the National Police.
Antasari said he met Anggoro in Singapore after he heard that Anggoro had bribed a number of KPK leaders, including Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.
After hearing Anggoro's confession, Antasari said he met with Ary Muladi in Malang to confirm the bribery, and Ary again confessed that he had handed over the bribe money from Anggoro to KPK leaders.
"But I still did not believe them," he said.
When asked whyAntasari had given a testimony that implicated Chandra and Bibit, he said he made the testimony based solely on the information Anggoro had given him.
"I met Anggoro because I love the KPK. I did not want the KPK to be tainted."
Anggoro fled the country to Singapore after the KPK barred him from traveling overseas and later named him a suspect in a corruption case at the Forestry Ministry.
After Antasari's testimony, the police pursued Chandra and Bibit and later declared them as suspects in a bribery case.
Chandra and Sigit vehemently stated that they had never taken any bribe money. They also said they did not know Ary Muladi.
Ary initially told police investigators that he handed over the money directly to Chandra and Sigit, but later retracted his statement, and said that he had handed over the money via a middleman named Yulianto.
But then the police went ahead in naming Sigit and Chandra suspects, and even detained them, an action that sparked public outcry.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono then established a fact-finding team to resolve the case.
