Replacement of armed forces chiefs long-time plan: TNI commander

Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Djoko Santoso dismissed any political motives behind the  replacement of the three armed forces chiefs of staff, which he said had long been planned.

Djoko said TNI headquarters had proposed the replacement as part of a regeneration in the military leadership.

“It’s for the sake of regeneration. After this, we will prepare for my successor because the TNI commander must be elected from the three chiefs of staff. So everything will be well-planned and there will be no rush in the substitution,” Djoko said at the State Palace.

He brushed aside reports of disobedience in the military as the reason for the changing of guard in the Army, Air Force and Navy. “There is no such thing. It has all been planned and is part of a routine tour of duty,” Djoko said.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to install Lt. Gen. George Toisutta, Vice Admiral Agus Suhartono and Vice Marshal Imam Sufaat as the Army, Navy and Air Force chiefs of staff respectively later on Monday.
