In an attempt to protect residential areas from the risk of flooding,
especially during the rainy season, the Tangerang municipal
administration has managed to reduce flood points from 67 to 23 across
the municipality.
Tangerang mayor Wahidin Halim said Monday that to eliminate the 44 flood points, the administration had spent Rp 72 billion (US$ 720,000) from the 2008 budget.
“We used the money to build embankment walls and 86 sluice gates on Cisadane River, 35 pump houses and 45 water pumps,” he said.
Wahidin said the administration had planned to build water reservoirs in Batu Sari, Pinang and Uwung Jaya subdistricts, the three districts which are still prone to flooding.
“We hope the Public Works Ministry can finance the physical construction now that we have submitted the proposal,” he said.
Wahidin said the administration has designated land along the Cisadane riverbanks as a protected water buffer zone.
“At least 20 meters of the land along the riverbanks will be developed into green belt land, with jogging tracks,” Wahidin said, adding that all buildings along the Cisadane would have to face toward the river to create a waterfront city image for the municipality.
