AKARTA: The Thousand Islands administration has reported a mysterious oil spill around the waters of Pramuka Island and Panggang Island to the environment ministry and the local police.

Thousand Islands administration spokesperson Purwoto said they had yet to discover the source of the oil spill that had killed a lot of fish in the area.

He said the waters have been jointly cleaned two days ago by the administration and the public. Purwoto said he would make sure this time that anyone responsible for the oil spill would be held accountable.

"Many pollution cases have remained unsolved," he told tempointeraktif.com.

Purwoto said the oil could have come from a leak from a ship or from off shore oil drilling.

The Thousand Island waters are polluted by oil spills every year. Since 2003 there have been at least 10 oil spill occurrences. - JP
