A 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Bima regency and municipality in West Nusa Tenggara may have caused Rp 23 billion (US$2.43 million) worth in damage, the local government has estimated.
Abdul Wahab, spokesman of Bima regency, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that in the regency alone the quake had caused damage worth up to Rp 20 billion.
Abdul said the quake has damaged areas in five districts, namely, Ambalawi, Wera, Soromandi, Donggo and Bolo, out of a total of 18 districts in the regency.
“[The quake] damaged houses, educational buildings, health facilities, roads, bridges and other public facilities,” he said.
Two people died in the quake that hit early Monday, while hundreds of others were injured.
Supardi Sukardan, head of West Nusa Tenggara Disaster Management Board, said the death toll was expected to increase.
