Around 300 personnel have joined search and rescue efforts to evacuate victims and clear the earth blocking a road following a landslide that hit Palopo in South Sulawesi.

At least 11 people have been found dead – not 18 as previously reported –, five are still being treated at Sawerigading State Hospital in Palopo and three people are still missing.

Dozens of militay, police, civilian officials, and search and rescue agency personnel, with help from local people, are working to clear the main highway connecting Palopo to Tana Toraja regency, which has been completely cut off at around 50 points.

The landslides occurred after a three-hour torrential downpour drenched the area late Sunday. Most of the badly hit places were located on deforested mountain slopes.

The local Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has warned of more landslides in the disaster-stricken areas as more rain is expected in the coming weeks.
