House commission to summon fact-finding team

The House of Representatives Commission III on legal affairs and human rights plans to summon the recently established fact-finding team, responsible for probing the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) fiasco.

The team issued a statement last night that said the police lacked evidence to charge two KPK deputy chairmen, Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto, in a bribery case and told them to drop the case.

"It is the job of the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to deem whether evidence is sufficient or not, whereas it is in the domain of the court to rule whether an individual is guilty or not. Why did the team issue a statement to the media on their judgment of the legal proceedings?” Azis
Syamsuddin from the Golkar Party told journalists at the House building in Jakarta, adding that the commission aimed to verify the issue with the team.

Azis said while he acknowledged the team's status as a representation of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the matter, he stressed that the team should have consulted the President before issuing any statement.

"The President is then the one who has the authority to issue a statement to the media," he said.
