PEKANBARU: A tapir which had been rescued by the Riau Nature and Conservation Center (BKSDA) died Monday from its wounds.
Arlis, a BKSDA officer, said the endangered animal was saved from a forest in Rangsang island, Renak Dungun village, Ransang district, Meranti Islands regency Saturday.
Riau BKSDA technical division head Syahimin said the female mammal, weighing 200 kilograms, was found with its front right leg in a trap.
"The wound was wide open and its leg was almost cut off. There was a hole in its shoulder. We are still investigating whether the animal was trapped or hunted," Syahimin said.
He admitted the evacuation was delayed due to the terrain, explaining that the team had to cross a river and coastal straits to reach the location. - JP
