Letter: Blaring loudspeakers

I don't know if Rafiq Mahmood (the Post, Nov. 7, p. 8) is a Muslim or not, but if he is, then I wish there were a lot more like him. His suggestion to follow the example set by Cairo with regard to mosque broadcasting is a splendid one.
Personally, I would be much happier with the alternative, i.e. muezzins calling from the minarets without the aid of super amplification. It really is a terrible disturbance, and it's highly inconsiderate to expect non-Muslims to have to put up with the blaring racket that issues from the majority of mosque speakers. I even know a few Muslims who are disturbed by the noise, but are too afraid to make their opinions known for fear of being thought impious.
I second Mahmood's motion for a single centralized muezzin broadcast, which would be heard just once.
