A fire, allegedly started by local residents, has razed bushes and trees in an area covering a total of 433 hectares near the caldera of Mount Bromo in East Java.
Nova Ellina, spokeswoman for Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park management, told tempointerkatif.com that locals often burn dry grass to allow younger grass, which they use to feed their cattle, to sprout, and grow during the wet season
This year's dry season there have been 15 major fires recorded. Last year, a total of 250 hectares of savanna were destroyed by fire. Fires in 2006 and 2007 damaged 705 hectares and 1,019 hectares, respectively.
The national park management has been conducting a campaign on fire danger to locals and patrolling the park to prevent further fires.
