Lunch time will get more interesting this November with Hotel Shangri-La's Nadaman offering two promotions: Wagyu Beef and Combination Lunch.

Wagyu ("wa" means "Japanese" and "gyu" means "cow") refers to breeds of cattle genetically subject to intense marbling and a high percentage of unsaturated fat.

Wagyu beef is known worldwide for its marbling characteristics, naturally enhanced flavor, tenderness and juiciness.

The smooth texture is believed to have been obtained using different breeding and feeding techniques, such as massaging or adding beer or sake to the cattle's feed.

Several areas in Japan are famous for the quality of their cattle, which are shipped around the world.

Nadaman is offering four types of wagyu beef: Teppanyaki Wagyu Beef, Wagyu Steak Kaiseki, Wagyu Shabu-Shabu and Wagyu Sukiyaki.

For couples who'd like to share their Wagyu beef, the Wagyu Shabu-Shabu set and Wagyu Sukiyaki sets are available.

Shabu-shabu is a Japanese-style hot pot, while sukiyaki is a Japanese steamboat meal.

Teppanyaki Wagyu Beef Course offers the succulent taste of wagyu beef teppan-style. Prepared live in front of guests, the wagyu steak is complemented by an appetizer, sashimi, salad, abalone, foie gras, king crab, grilled vegetables, fried rice, soup, pickles and dessert.

Guests wanting to savor wagyu beef served the traditional way may prefer Wagyu Steak Kaiseki. Served with an appetizer, sashimi, a boiled dish, salad, a rice dish and dessert, the 120-gram steak presents juicy and tender meat in true Japanese dining style.

On a recent visit to Nadaman, The Jakarta Post decided to try Wagyu Steak Kaiseki and shared it with friends. It looks good and tastes great. Cut into several slices, the beef is tender and juicy, while the rest of the menu is just delicious.

Nadaman not only offers guests with wagyu this November, but also a chance to create their own traditional Japanese lunch set. Dubbed the Combination Lunch, the lunch set allows guests to choose their salad, sashimi, fried dish, grilled dish, noodles and rice.

For the salad, the options vary from green salad, potato salad, seaweed salad, radish salad, and tomato salad, while for sashimi, there are three choices: salmon and squid, tuna and mackerel, yellowtail and octopus.

Fried dishes include deep-fried chicken, prawn tempura, deep-fried tofu, deep-fried fish, fried oysters and fried small potatoes, while grilled items consist of sardine, prawn teriyaki, mackerel, grilled eel, hata hata fish or beef teriyaki.

For noodle-lovers there are white noodles, buckwheat noodles, vermicelli, flat noodles, green tea noodles or fried white noodles.

Rice dishes include steamed rice, fried rice, California rolls, jumbo rolls, steamed rice with small fish and salmon rice balls.

For the Combination Lunch, the Post tried potato salad, salmon and squid, fried oysters, grilled eel, green tea noodles and salmon rice balls, and all of which passed with flying colors.

The salad consists of mashed potato, sliced cucumber and lettuce. The sashimi was fresh, the oysters were crispy and the eel was juicy. The green tea noodles tasted healthy, while salmon rice balls, or shake onigiri, which is made from plain rice formed into triangular shape, stuffed by salmon and wrapped by seaweed and the size of an adult's palm, was filling.

Perhaps the best way to enjoy the Combination Lunch is to bring along friends and order from a different set menu. When the menus are laid on the table, we can see how the other dishes look, ask our friends how it tastes and make a mental note to order them the next time we return.

Nadaman's Wagyu beef promo is available until Nov. 20, and the Combination Lunch is on offer until Nov. 30.
