JAKARTA: The city's Parks and Cemetery Agency told residents, especially motorists, to remain alert during the rainy season since half of the city's 4 million large trees were prone to falling.
A unit head with the agency, Dwi Bintarto, said those trees were fragile as most were more than 30 years old.
"Many trees, especially those on the roadsides, have weaker roots due to recurrent inundation from rain water," he told beritajakarta.com.
Last week in Joglo, West Jakarta, two trees were toppled by heavy rain, collapsing onto a house and a public minivan.
The heavy downpour coupled with strong winds also brought down three trees in Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Dwi said that fragile trees were located on Jl. Medan Merdeka and Jl. Teuku Umar, both in Central Jakarta, Jl. Lansat, Jl. Hangtuah and Jl. Pakubuwono in South Jakarta. - JP
