A local celebration of the Global Entrepreneurship Week commenced on Monday in Jakarta with the first event, the Pecha Kucha night, held in the evening.
A string of events around the capital are scheduled for the week ending Sunday, including a discussion with the Creative Movement, whose members are the finalists of the British Council’s International Young Creative Entrepreneur competition. The British Council is among the organizers of the event.
On Wednesday, Reggy Hasibuan, the co-founder of Anomali youth empowerment center in Malang, East Java, will make a presentation of his project to turn Malang into an eco-city.
Sunday will see presentations from environmental engineer Yuyun Ismawati, scientist Hokky Situngkir, social entrepreneur Silverius Oscar Unggul and Sasando player Jacko Hendrick Ayub Bulan, at an event called the TEDx Jakarta.
British Council country director Keith Davies said the week, which is being celebrated globally in several different countries, created mass participation and exposed people of all ages to quality entrepreneurial experience.
“It’s about developing people’s enterprise skills [and] confidence, and helping them realize their ambitions,” Davies said in his opening speech.
He added that entrepreneurship was particularly important today because it could “spark a global economic recovery”.
“In these troubled economic times, we need entrepreneurs more than ever: Fresh thinkers who spot opportunities, apply their talents and overcome obstacles to make their ideas happen,” Davies said. (adh)
