State power company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PT PLN) expects to cut energy costs by Rp 26.6 trillion (US$ 2.6 billion) next year, the president director Fahmi Mochtar told lawmakers Monday.

In a written report given to the House of Representatives Commission VII overseeing energy and mining, PLN said the reduction came from the lower usage of oil-based fuels in 2010.  The consumption of oil-based fuels is expected to drop from 8.8 million kilo liters, which is this year's consumption estimation, to 4 million kiloliters in 2010.

PLN has actually already begun to cut energy costs starting this year. In 2008, PLN consumed 11.3 million kiloliters oil-based fuels. As the consumption is estimated to drop to 8.8 million kiloliters this year, PLN expects to save 13.4 trillion energy costs in 2009.

By reducing oil-based fuels, PLN has consumed more gas and coal for its power plants. The company consumed 21 million tonnes coal in 2008. The figure is expected to increase to 22.8 million tones in 2009 and 29.6 million tonnes in 2010.
