Indonesian delegates to the upcoming Copenhagen climate talks said they would propose a new forest initiative to help local people gain financial benefits from forest protection schemes.

The pro-poor carbon initiative would pave the way for the application of emission cut schemes to get money from developed nations.

“We have finished mapping forest areas in provinces of Kalimantan, Sumatra and Java,” Indonesian delegate Hadi Haryanto, who is also director general of forest production development at the Forestry Ministry, said Monday.

He said there were about 6.2 million hectares of forests that would be able to benefit from carbon reduction schemes.

“But we need a legally binding agreement on financing to encourage local people to contribute to emission reduction in dealing with climate change,” he said.

Negotiators from 190 countries will attend the Copenhagen climate change talks from Dec. 7 to 18 to formulate a new protocol on emission cut programs to slow down global warming.
