A chapter of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), the highest Muslim authority, has suggested the government reconsider the screening permit for 2012, after the MUI chapter in Malang, East Java, saying that the Hollywood movie was misleading and against Islamic beliefs.
Asywadie Syukur, chairman of South Kalimantan's MUI, said Tuesday the government should pay more serious attention to matters that may mislead or confuse Muslims.
“On the other hand, Muslims should also be careful not get carried away by anything negative or against religious values,” he said as quoted by Antara state news agency
Produced by Sony Pictures, Roland Emmerich's 2012 is a new movie based on the Mayan doomsday prediction starring John Cusack.
Mahmud Zubaidi, head of the Malang regency chapter of the MUI, said Monday the movie was inappropriate, especially for Muslims, who should believe that no one but Allah knows when doomsday will come. He warned that the film could give people the wrong idea about doomsday and called on all Muslims not to watch it.
Many disagreed with the MUI call to ban the film, expressing their protests on the Internet.
