Comments: Bullying culture

A- A A+

It seems many of our educators never learn from the horrific violence that goes on in schools and other educational institutions.

Many have been killed or hospitalized due to unnecessary accidents, but school authorities seem to have no wish, or are powerless, to stop the brutality, usually perpetrated by senior students against their juniors.

Ironically, the latest incident occurred at one of the only two schools in Jakarta that were certified as a bullying-free school.

Your comments:
The problem lies within the school itself. Some teachers and parents still believe that bullying is something common, based on their own experience. "Every child goes through it, didn't you?" are some of their comments.

Therefore there should be workshops and seminars for educators and parents, and students that bullying is not normal, it is not common. However, educators and parents should also be trained not to bully their own students or children.

Some problems that exist result from parents and teachers bullying their own children and students. "Those that are guilty should be punished?" Maybe have consequences, when we deal with bullying, there are four parties involved: the victim, the bully, the witness and the school.

All need to be involved. We need to understand that in general the bully was and maybe still is a victim him/herself.

Purchasing aircraft from Russia, China -- Nov. 13, p. 4

Indonesia will purchase new trainer/light attack aircraft from Russia and China as part of efforts to revitalize its primary defense system, says newly sworn-in Air Force chief of staff Vice Marshal Imam Safaat. He said the new jets, consisting of the Yak-130 from Russia and the FTC-2000 Mountain Eagle from China, would replace the British Hawk Mk-53 jets and American OV-10 Bronco.

Your comments:
I think Indonesia has to start creating jet fighter planes. We have PT DI to develop it; we can't depend on other countries for our defense.

If they embargo spare parts we cannot do anything. We have lost East Timor.
