State prosecutors at Medan District Court are seeking a 12 year jail term for three defendants involved in a chaotic rally leading to the death of former North Sumatra Legislative Council speaker Abdul Aziz Angkat in February.

In a separate court session on Thursday, the prosecutors sought a 12 year prison sentence for Datumira Simanjutak and John Haidel Samosir. Another defendant Hasudungan Butarbutar also faces a possible 11 years behind bars.

The prosecutors said the defendants had violated article 146 of the Criminal Code on dissolution of a plenary meeting.

Prosecutor S. Overa Tambunan said the protesters had yelled while carrying banners and a coffin during the event.

“They demanded that Abdul Aziz sign the recommendation on the formation of Tapanuli as a new province, threatening that he would die otherwise,” Overa told tempointeraktif.com. (ewd)
