Tangerang regency will soon face a shortage of teachers because 1,000 out of the existing 7,288 will retire by the end of the year an official said Thursday.

Encep Suhayat, head of the career promotion department at the regency’s education agency, said the 1,000 teachers were promoted as civil servants in 1974.

“If we refer to the massive promotion rule, the teachers who currently teach various subjects at elementary, junior high and senior high schools will automatically retire this year,” he said.

The agency is still looking for the best way to cope with the shortfall of schoolteachers starting January.

“The agency will likely recruit volunteers to teach at schools and it has reported the problem to the regency’s human resource agency [BKD],” Encep said, adding the agency had employed 3,600 volunteers to teach at schools spread across the regency’s 29 districts.

Separately, Didi Budiharta, head of the BKD, said to fill the position left vacant by the outgoing teachers, the agency had to wait for the results of the civil servant recruitment tests.

“However, we can only provide 188 out of the 392 civil servants requested by the regency to fill the demand for teachers,” he said.
