JAKARTA: Everyone seems to be talking about doomsday predictions this week, after thousands Jakartans flocked to theatres to watch a movie about the day of reckoning, titled 2012.

But MTV VJ Daniel Mananta, one of those movie enthusiasts, says he doesn’t buy the prediction at all.
“I was curious about the movie and wanted to watch it for the action scenes,” says the 28-year-old, “But I don’t believe anyone in this world can predict God’s plan.”

The movie revolves around the day of reckoning — Dec. 20, 2012 — as per the ancient Mayan prediction. According to Daniel, the movie attracted large crowds because of the fear factor.

“I’m not afraid of that kind of thing,” Daniel says. “It’s just a bunch of Hollywood tricks packaged with perfect promotional strategies that take advantage of people’s fear of doomsday,” he adds.

However, Daniel goes on, he believes such a movie conveys an important message.

“Perhaps it’s like the movie Armageddon, which tells us to pay more attention to the Earth and to other human beings.”

“It also tells us to prepare ourselves — whether we’re ready for hell or heaven. So you can do some self-evaluating,” he adds.  — JP
