A man was rushed to hospital in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi, early Friday after a ricochet from a bullet fired by a counterterror squad member injured his right hand and stomach.
Hasruddin, 33, and the police officer were both in the city’s biggest nightclub, Spacebar and Lounge, during the shooting.
A spokesman for the provincial police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Irfaizal Nasution, said Friday the unnamed officer told internal affairs investigators the incident occurred when he drew out his sidearm in self-defense after a number of people attacked him. Security guards, however, tried to grab the weapon to avoid any fatalities.
“He intended to fire a warning shot, but pressed the trigger too early,” Irfaizal said.
Irfaizal added the officer was in police custody after being declared a suspect for allegedly violating police discipline guidelines.
As of Friday afternoon, Hasruddin was still in intensive care.
Ilham, Hasruddin’ brother, demanded the police cover his sibling’s medical expenses and investigate the incident.

Here we go again. So called well trained Indonesian anti-terrorist police who show they are nothing of the sort; more gun ho gangsters then protectors of the peace. Why are they even allowed to carry guns off duty? Why are they allowed in crowded public places with guns? It is a "joke". The RI is a joke. "Ilham, Hasruddin’ brother, demanded the police cover his sibling’s medical expenses and investigate the incident." 1) That is all??!! What about compensation??!! 2) Good luck; you will need it; the Indonesian police have proven they are not accountable to anyone.David K. — Sat, 11/21/2009 - 11:54am
1) What is this person going out, drinking i'm persuming with his sidearm? 2) Warning shot but pressed the trigger too early, just means he was trying to kill someone. 3)why did they attack him? (I persume he was acting like a bigshot and pissed off the wrong people) Conclusion : Police are acting far to arrogant. My belief that when they were under the military they would never dream of doing anything like this. Fight like a man cop if you act like such a douche don't wave your gun around saying, "I am the police i can do whatever I want." Hasruddin hopefully will recover, and he should sue the Indonesian Police for billions of Rupiah.
