A man was rushed to hospital in Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi, early Friday after a ricochet from a bullet fired by a counterterror squad member injured his right hand and stomach.
Hasruddin, 33, and the police officer were both in the city’s biggest nightclub, Spacebar and Lounge, during the shooting.
A spokesman for the provincial police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Irfaizal Nasution, said Friday the unnamed officer told internal affairs investigators the incident occurred when he drew out his sidearm in self-defense after a number of people attacked him. Security guards, however, tried to grab the weapon to avoid any fatalities.
“He intended to fire a warning shot, but pressed the trigger too early,” Irfaizal said.
Irfaizal added the officer was in police custody after being declared a suspect for allegedly violating police discipline guidelines.
As of Friday afternoon, Hasruddin was still in intensive care.
Ilham, Hasruddin’ brother, demanded the police cover his sibling’s medical expenses and investigate the incident.
