A motorbike rider was severely injured after a base transceiver station tower, belonging to telecommunications giant Telkomsel, fell during a rainstorm in the West Sumatran capital of Padang on Friday.
Iwan, 17, was passing the tower on Jl. Hamka when the 50-meter structure, built on a two-story shop, collapsed. Local residents rushed Iwan to Ibnu Sina Hospital. He was suspected of having broken ribs.
It took workers an hour and a half to remove the tower wreckage from the road. Local police rerouted traffic to facilitate the cleanup.
Koto Tangah Police chief Adj. Comr. Masrial suspected the tower’s foundation was damaged by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rattled the city on Sept. 30.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency warned rainstorms would continue in West Sumatra until around Nov. 26.
