National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Nanan Soekarna said Friday that the police summoning representatives of two daily newspaper was not related to a defamation complaint filed by alleged bribery mastermind Anggodo Widjojo.

“Let me say it clearly, the summons were not related to Anggodo's complaint,” he told journalists, who were staging a rally against the summoning the National Police Headquarters, as quoted by Antara news agency.

“The summons was not to criminalize or intimidate press,” he added.

Police summoned representatives of daily newspaper Kompas and Seputar Indonesia and questioned them on news items related to the alleged fabrication of evidence in a bribery case that has implicated two deputy chairmen of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The two dailies were among those that published the transcript of wiretapped conversations between Anggodo and high-ranking National Police and Attorney General's Office officials in a possible plot to frame KPK deputies Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah.

The police have put Anggodo under their protection despite him publicly admitting to having attempted to bribe KPK leaders. The summons instantly sparked criticism from the public, who accused the police of attempting to suppress the media.
