TANGERANG: Tangerang regency will likely face a shortage of teachers because 1,000 out of a total of 7,288 will retire by the year-end, an official said Thursday.

Encep Suhayat, the head of the career promotion department at the regency's education agency, said his office was looking for the best way to cope with the lack of teachers.

He said the agency had modernized its database so as to be able anticipate a lack of teachers in the future.

"The agency has reported the problem to the regency's BKD *human resource agency* and will likely recruit contract teachers," he said.

Didi Budiharta, the head of the BKD, said to make up the shortfall, the agency had to wait for the results of the civil service recruitment test.

"The regency has a civil service quota of 392, and only 188 are allocated to teachers," he said. - JP
