Businessman Anggodo Widjojo has insisted the police rely on solid evidence if they implicate him in connection with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) case, his lawyer says.

Bonaran Situmeang, Anggodo’s defense attorney, warned the police Saturday against bowing to public pressure or recommendations from the presidential fact-finding team to ensnare his client.

“Someone cannot be declared a suspect based on the public’s view, or advice from a group such as the fact-finding team,” Bonaran said.

He said if the police declared his client a suspect based on wiretapped conversations involving Anggodo, overheard during a Constitutional Court hearing on Nov. 3, the police must prove the bugging was legitimate in accordance with the 2002 KPK Law.

“Don’t say it’s solid evidence unless the legitimacy of the recorded conversation is guaranteed,” Bonaran said.

The police are gathering evidence to implicate Anggodo on six charges, ranging from defamation against the President to bribery.

Anggodo, brother of graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo, was heard in the conversations bugged by the KPK to orchestrate a plot to fabricate evidence and implicate KPK deputy chiefs Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M. Hamzah of blackmail, bribery and abuse of power.
