PADANG: A motorbike rider was severely injured after a base transceiver station tower, belonging to Telkomsel, fell during a rainstorm in the West Sumatran capital of Padang on Friday.
Iwan, 17, was passing the tower when the 50-meter structure, built on a two-story shop, collapsed.
Bystanders rushed Iwan to Ibnu Sina Hospital with suspected broken ribs.
It took workers an hour and a half to remove the wreckage from the road. Local police rerouted traffic to facilitate the cleanup.
Koto Tangah Police chief Adj. Comr. Masrial suspected the tower's foundation was damaged by the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that leveled the city on Sept. 30.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency warned that rainstorms would continue in West Sumatra until next week. - JP
