JAKARTA: A fire gutted a shop-house on Jl. Bina Marga in Cipayung, East Jakarta, early Friday morning, killing two people.
Nawiroh, 60, and her son Hasan, 30, were trapped in the 100-square-meter shop-house and could not escape the fire.
"The house only had one exit in the front. The steel rolling doors blocked their exit. Even firefighters found it difficult to break into the house," Badri, a security guard who witnessed the fire, told news portal beritajakarta.com.
A duty officer with the East Jakarta Fire Department, Munadi, said the department deployed 14 fire engines to put out the blaze. The department suspected the fire was caused by a short circuit.
The victims' bodies were taken to Soekanto Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. -JP
