Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri has apologized to the family of Muslim scholar Nurcholish Madjid (Cak Nur) over his statements connecting the late scholar with the alleged criminalization of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders .

Yudi Latif from the Nurcholish Madjid Society (NMS) said on Sunday the chief had met with the family Friday and expressed his apology for any inconvenience or problems caused by his statements.

During a hearing with members of the House of Representatives Commission III on legal affairs, the chief mentioned that the KPK did not investigate an alleged graft case at the Forestry Ministry involving former forestry minister Malam Sambat Ka'ban because the anti-graft body's suspended deputy chief Chandra M. Hamzah had an emotional relationship with Ka'ban.

Ka'ban, the chief elaborated, had helped Chandra to marry Cak Nur's daughter Nadia Madjid.

Cak Nur's widow Omi Komaria Madjid told Antara state news agency that she and her family had forgiven the chief for his statements to put the dispute to rest. (ewd)
