Residents of two villages in Purworejo regency, Central Java, began repairing their houses Sunday, which were damaged during a landslide two days ago.
The landslide destroyed nine houses and another 37 at Giymbong and Cepedak villages of Bruno district, Purworejo. There were no fatalities.
The incident has also isolated the villages as it blocked road access.
Hardoyo, the regency chief for Nation Unity, Politics and Community Protection, said the villages were prone to a landslide in heavy rainfall.
Resident Karsino said he evacuated from the area.
“I had a hunch this would happen,” Karsono said. “My home, located near a steep bank, collapsed soon after the landslide.”
Central Java Disaster Handling Agency chief P. Jarot Nugroho said his office had allocated Rp 9. 2 billion (US$ 920,000) this year, up from last year’s Rp 8.8 billion, to manage natural disasters in the province.
Jarot said 27 of 35 regencies in the province were prone to landslides.
