Information and Communication Minister Tifatul Sembiring says stricter regulations are needed for law-enforcement institutions conducting wiretaps.
“In future, it would be better if law enforcement institutions don’t exploit their wire-tapping rights recklessly,” he said at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Monday.
“Because of law enforcement institutions’ recklessness … they ended up wiretapping each other,” he added.
Tifatul was referring to a controversial legal battle involving top officials of the National Police, the AGO and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
The KPK had recorded a telephone conversation involving National Police chief of detectives Com. Gen. Susno Duadji, in which he is suspected of having requested a bribe during his investigation of the Bank Century scandal.
The KPK also recently obtained a tape that reveals an alleged conspiracy between top officers of the police and the AGO to frame suspended KPK deputy chairmen Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto.
To prevent future conflicts between legal institutions, Tifatul said, it would be better to stipulate that courts had to provide authorization before anyone could wiretap in investigations.
Tifatul also said it would be better for courts and legal institutions to coordinate with his ministry.
