A closed-door disciplinary hearing on Tuesday ordered the detention of 10 police officers who had violated arrest procedure, and caused the death of a suspected gambler in Depok last week.
After the hearing, Depok Police deputy chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Ahmad Subarkah said nine officers would spend two weeks in police detention, while First. Brig. Irwan Sarjana, the officer who shot the suspected gambler, would serve 21 days’ detention.
The disciplinary panel had found Iwan guilty of breaking standard arrest procedure, Ahmad said.
“He fired [his firearm] too quickly,” Ahmad said.
The panel also suspended the promotions of Iwan and chief Brig. Irvan, who led the arrest, for one year and six months, respectively.
After serving their detention, seven officers, including Iwan and Irvan, will be posted to other precincts.
Last Tuesday, a group of 10 officers of the Depok Police raided an uninhabited house in Limo, Depok, arresting several minivan drivers who were allegedly gambling on the premises.
During the raid, one of the officers shot driver Subagio, 34, who “attempted to escape”. Subagio died on the way to the hospital.
Witnesses, most of them friends of the victim, said the shooting was completely unnecessary because the house they had raided only had one exit, which the police had already secured.
